Islamic Guidance & Financial Assistance

What Is Zakat?

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and is an obligation upon eligible Muslims who meet the required financial threshold (nisāb).

It is an act of worship that purifies wealth, supports those in need, and strengthens the community through compassion and responsibility.

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.” (Qur’an 9:103)

At ISF, zakat funds are distributed with care, confidentiality, and attention to local community needs whenever possible.

What Is Zakat al-Fitr?

Zakat al-Fitr is a charitable obligation associated with the month of Ramadan and is due before the Eid prayer.

It is intended to:

  • help individuals and families in need,
  • allow everyone to participate in Eid,
  • and purify the fasting person from shortcomings during Ramadan.

ISF collects and distributes Zakat al-Fitr according to Islamic guidelines before Eid prayer.

What Is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah is voluntary charity given beyond obligatory zakat.

Sadaqah may include:

  • financial support,
  • food assistance,
  • helping families in hardship,
  • community support,
  • or acts of kindness and generosity.

Islam encourages ongoing charity and caring for others throughout the year.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Sahih Muslim)

Who Can Receive Zakat?

The Qur’an identifies categories of individuals eligible to receive zakat in Qur’an 9:60.

This includes support for:

  • the poor,
  • the needy,
  • individuals facing hardship,
  • travelers in need,
  • and others eligible according to Islamic guidelines.

ISF reviews requests respectfully and carefully according to Islamic principles and local community needs.
